No, this game is a battle royale game and requires at least 2 players and an online server to play. Most commonly lobbies get filled with dozens of players.
In the PDF files on hosting a server, there are instructions on how to fill your lobbies with Bots, so you'd be able to play at least the battle royale mode in single player.
On the contrary to what the other guy said, you can in fact play it single player with 42 bots, however you either need to join a server or make your own server, the command for that should be in one of the pdfs
A server is just a computer with server software to allow others to connect to you. You can host and join your own server on the same system without a significant impact to game performance.

Do you need to have a separate system to host a server?
Not necessarily, but hosting and playing on the same system will impact game performance, network, and server latency.

God bless the devs
